17 терять почву под ногами
терять почву (землю) под ногами (из-под ног, под собой)lose the ground under one's feet; be (get) out of one's depth; feel one's last hold slip ping awayТакие люди, как Иванов, не решают вопросов, а падают под их тяжестью. Они теряются, разводят руками, нервничают, жалуются, делают глупости и в конце концов, дав волю своим рыхлым, распущенным нервам, теряют под ногами почву и поступают в разряд "надломленных" и "непонятых". (А. Чехов, Письмо А. С. Суворину, 30 дек. 1888) — Men like Ivanov do not solve difficulties but collapse under their weight. They lose their heads, gesticulate, become nervous, complain, do silly things, and finally, giving rein to their flabby, undisciplined nerves, lose the ground under their feet and enter the class of the 'broken down' and 'misunderstood'.
- Но, позвольте... - возразил Евгений Павлович, теряя последнюю почву под ногами, - допустим, квартира и имущество подлежат конфискации. Но ведь я освобождён, - следовательно, тем самым оправдан и имею право жить где-нибудь. (Б. Лавренёв, Седьмой спутник) — 'But one moment,' Evgeny Pavlovich ventured, feeling his last hold slipping away. 'Even assuming that the flat and property are subject to confiscation - I have been released, have I not, consequently I am cleared and am entitled to live somewhere.'

[barca] small boat, dinghyPATERABoth legal and illegal immigration into Spain have risen dramatically in recent years, as economic development attracts those from countries with limited job opportunities, especially in North Africa, Eastern Europe and South America. For a number of years many would-be immigrants from Africa have crossed the Straits of Gibraltar in small boats which can barely sustain their weight, and which the Spanish press refer to as pateras, a term rarely used before but now automatically associated with the idea of illegal immigration. Because of the increasingly sophisticated technology used to police the Straits in the 1990s, the crossing from Morocco to the Canaries was much used in the 1990s. As that route in its turn became more heavily patrolled, Mauretania has become a common point of departure for those heading for the Canaries. As the distance to be covered by the overloaded craft increases, so does the risk, but even the rising death toll shows no sign of reducing the numbers prepared to make such voyages.* * *f small boat
